Introducing Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT

Mercedes-Benz has announced it will be the first U.S. automaker to debut a conditionally automated driving system with a SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Level 3 certification. Known as Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT, this system can detect your surroundings and take complete control of your vehicle in certain driving conditions, allowing you to take your hands off the wheel and focus on other activities. The team at Mercedes-Benz of Portland has all the details on the Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT below.
What Is Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT?
What makes Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT so special? As the first SAE Level 3 certified automated driving system in the U.S., Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT is a pioneer in automated driving. Under certain conditions, this system is able to take full control of the drive by using highly advanced sensors to detect your surroundings and orient your vehicle on the road in real time.
While SAE Level 2 vehicles can assist with braking, accelerating, and steering, the driver still maintains full responsibility for the driving task at all times. However, DRIVE PILOT allows you to take your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road.
For example, say you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic. With DRIVE PILOT engaged, you can pick up your favorite book, do a crossword puzzle, or use your central screen to play games and watch videos.
How Does Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT Work?
Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT can control driving tasks under the following conditions:
- Moderate to heavy traffic with speeds under 40 mph
- Construction-free roads
- Clear weather and daylight
- Clear lane markings on approved freeways
- Driver visible via camera above driver’s display
DRIVE PILOT is a conditionally automated driving system, but it still requires you to remain alert and take back control of your vehicle when requested. If you don’t respond within 10 seconds of the takeover request, DRIVE PILOT will begin the emergency stop procedure by turning on your hazard lights, bringing your vehicle to a complete stop in its lane, activating the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system, and unlocking your doors to provide access to first responders.
What Vehicles Will Offer Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT?
DRIVE PILOT is slated to arrive in late 2023 and will be offered via subscription through the U.S. Mercedes me connect store for S-Class and EQS Sedan models. Currently, DRIVE PILOT is certified to perform on major freeways in California and parts of Nevada. As time goes on, we can expect DRIVE PILOT to be accessible in more parts of the country.
