Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Most new Mercedes-Benz vehicles come with an electronic oil level monitor that allows you to check your Mercedes-Benz motor oil level digitally right from inside the comfort of your MBTex or genuine leather upholstered driver’s seat. That having been, said, be sure to refer to your owner’s manual for Mercedes-Benz recommendations. If you’re checking the oil manually, as is often required if you’re driving an older vehicle, just follow these steps:

  1. Park on level ground, then turn off the engine.
  2. Open the engine bay to locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil off.
  4. Put the dipstick back, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks generally have a way of showing you the proper oil level. If the top of your oil streak is between two marks or within a cross-hatched area, the level is sufficient. If it isn’t, though, you’ll want to add more oil.

Remember: you should always purchase the grade and type of Mercedes-Benz motor oil recommended in your owner’s manual. When adding it in, remove the oil filler cap, then add oil a little bit at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the right level.

Why Check Mercedes-Benz Motor Oil Level?

Checking the Mercedes-Benz motor oil level is a sometimes-overlooked component of vehicle maintenance. But that doesn’t diminish the importance of doing so on the regular. In fact, you should check the level about once every month, and have oil changes performed roughly every 5,000 miles, or at least twice a year. Have you noticed that your car’s hood is hot to the touch or steam is billowing out from underneath the hood? It’s time to schedule a service appointment right away. For standard maintenance like oil changes, no appointment is necessary.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

Different vehicles have different processes to reset their oil change lights. As such, you’ll always want to check your owner’s manual for specific guidelines. That having been said, barring bringing your vehicle to the Mercedes-Benz service center for repairs, here’s a general guide for how to reset an oil change maintenance light:

How to Reset Oil Change Light: Step-by-Step:

  • Turn all systems of your car off, but leave the engine running.
  • Find the “reset” button or stick on the dashboard (typically found near the speedometer and fuel gauge).
  • Hold the button down until the oil change light begins to flash (sign of resetting may differ per vehicle).
  • Turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds, then turn your car back on.
